Scripture Reading: Matthew 9:9-13

The Calling of Matthew

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[a] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

 Encouragement

  • Romans 12: 16-18 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
  • John 11:25: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.
  • John 14:27: Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
  • Colossians 3:13: “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you”.
  • Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Dear Lord, illuminate us, our families, schools, workplaces, in our nation and among the nations of the earth with hope, joy, peace, unending love and inspiration. Let our leaders work together with wisdom across alleged or observed dividing lines to achieve peaceful and equitable outcomes. Enable the countries at war to find peaceful ways to communicate with each other. Let our leaders across this country and beyond discern and embrace meaningful dialogues that promote peace in all areas.
